Rainwater harvesting is not a renewable energy generation technology, but saves considerable energy by utilising rain water for many domestic and business uses not requiring potable drinking water. The energy taken to process and deliver potable drinking water to our homes and business can be saved, when rain water is used for a variety of applications including washing machines, toilets, garden sprinklers, car washing and garden ponds. Harvesting rain water is one of the key objectives for sustainable homes and forms part of the measurement criteria for grading properties.
Rainwater harvesting, as the name implies, is the collection of rainwater which is then stored in a large tank located primarily below the ground surface. During installation considerable groundwork and some disruption can be expected. It is certainly worth considering if you are planning an extension or in a new build, or during a Ground Source Heat Pump installation.
Rainwater harvesting is not the same as Grey Water Collection which seeks to reuse certain types of waste domestic water particularly for garden watering and uses a different system entirely.
EcoSaveit is happy to advise, design and install both Rainwater Harvesting and Grey Water Collection systems.
